When Apollo Doom and I play ODST online, he is usually subjected to me mumbling under my breath like a crazy person. I'll remember about 49 different observations I wanted to discuss with him and the poor guy practically gets hit with a fire hose of information. We get to talk about maybe a dozen of them and then he politely excuses himself and wonders why he sent me a party invite in the first place. Poor guy.
One of the many things I bring up in these conversations is "this number that appears a lot that I have in my notes somewhere now where is it hang on I think I ... hey did you see that Enigma posted about the plinths and where is Kenji in his pajamaz again? ... wait... did you want to play Firefight?" Like I said... poor guy.
Well, that number is 55.6992.3840 and I first jotted it down while looking at the Coastal Highway overhead vid displays. Apollo drew my attention to them because the displays also read "subliminal message <6>" which he thought was hilarious.
It was funnier than me dying for the tenth time in a row while jotting down numbers, anyhow.
The number turns up in Mombasa Streets as well... above the district doors on the "Route Open" and "Route Closed" vid displays:
I thought I saw it on a sign in either NMPD HQ or Data Hive. I didn't have any luck substantiating this claim while looking through the collection of 1,000 images I haven't posted in our gallery yet, but I did find this (http://www.gruntspajamas.com/gallery/v/SGP/numbers/SL-2009_10_12-ColdGlider-DataHive6992Glitch.jpg.html):
No, it's not me trying to be a Photoshop Artiste again... it's the result of trying to take a snapshot of an in-game cinematic in Theater Mode (did you know you could do that, by the way?)
;)
I was trying to capture all of the text that appears in "SI View". (We need a good term for this. SI Overlay? SI View? SI Console?) Anyhow... the snapshot gets corrupted whenever you try to capture that view. I figured it was either due to a glitch with the SI View or intentional censorship on Bungie's part. I paid it little mind until now... because as you can see the number 55.6992.3840 appears on the right. Huh? What in the name of Dante's Inferno is that doing there?
But wait... there's more...
"The Happy Emo" made a post (http://admin.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=37562464&postRepeater1-p=62) over on the Big Forum in which he linked a photo of the ODST game controller:
SOMETHING NEW FOUND! I hope...
This picture (http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/h3odst-control-5-580.jpg) is taken from an ODST controller. It is said the controller has clues on it. Well... The numbers right below "Kikowani" I believe is the time. Military time of course which would make sense. The ACTUALLY time. Now... Everytime you go to a load see, You see in the bottom right corner:
MBaraki
(and the time it is)
On the controller it says: 23:03:28:30
That would mean at roughly about 11:03pm something happens. I dunno what and I dunno where. But honestly... I think I might be on to something.
10.27.2009 10:30 AM PDT
That's right. Emblazoned on the bottom right of the controller is our mysterious number again: 55.6992.3840.
So I decided to check out the opening cinematic of NMPD Headquarters in Theater Mode. I paused in SI View. Among the numerous amounts of dynamic numerical content in this view are these appearances:
Lower Left:
ACTION//
AAR CONTROL
55.6992.3840
Bottom Center Right:
BITRATE THRESHOLD:223
55.6992.3840
SYNC>>NOMIN
55.6992.3840
Bottom Right:
82002 383832 727777 777
55.6992.3840
The last quote contains a string of numbers which also appears on the controller.
Of course when I tried to take a snapshot, I got this (http://www.gruntspajamas.com/gallery/v/SGP/numbers/99515301-Full.jpg.html):
Our new favorite number doesn't appear... instead the text "LINK FAIL..." appears on the right. This same text was appearing under the SI Icon in the upper right when I took the image. Seems like glitched theater mode images are just that- glitches.
Nevertheless, I humbly submit that the number 55.6992.3840 is somehow significant. Perhaps all of the numbers within the controller's artwork are. Might it have something to do with the J Banners? With the Siege of Madrigal? With the story behind the SI?
Please keep your eyes peeled for more instances of this number, and don't be shy about providing screenshots of them!
...and I'd like to make a request: if you have the ODST controller and a digital camera can you please take a photo similar to the one that Happy Emo linked? I'd like the SGP to have their "own" photo of it in the gallery.
Thanks in advance, and thanks for reading! Apollo isn't returning my party invites. I hear he wearz pajamaz these days and mumbles under his breath. Poor guy...
All SGP images in this post are living in the gallery (http://www.gruntspajamas.com/gallery/v/SGP/numbers/?g2_page=2).

Niiice find CG, while writing this (http://www.gruntspajamas.com/forum/index.php?topic=248.0) I had no idea of that kind of link. I'll keep my eyes open...
-
LOL So not only were we coincidentally writing long posts with related subjects, but also we were writing replies where we linked those posts to each other's threads! Jinx!
-
 Epic win.
-
When I took some cinematic pics it never went corrupt for me... Maybe I'll try again...
-
I'm supposed to be haivng friends come over some time to finish up the VidMasters (that's why I havn't posted anything in the recon stuff, lol) Getting my brother and two friends recon, and if I already had it, it might dampen a friendship, lol.
Anyway, my friend has the ODST controller, so I'll try to get some 15mpx pictures of it ;). Finally put that camera to work, lol.
-
Sounds great, Brain! And Kenji... the snapshots only corrupt when the cinematic is showing the Supervisor's camera view.
-
probably should pay a little more attention... lol
-
Seein as I happened to be up late and a bit bored..
The Subliminal message part, is in each of the differrent Superintendant pics Bungie made when they were first announcing ODST as Recon.
I went over those top to bottom at the time, but it may be worth a second look again. Each successive one had a different Subliminal Message #.
They're also Rife with bits of seemingly random numbers.
Could be they are random and the same layout was used in the game. Who know's, may be worth a look.
-
I can't get a photo, but I own a controller, so here's a few things written on it:
PROPERTY OF UNSC
Unit weight: 265g (Fueled)
105mm x 154mm x 64.3mm
H3-0
1ε100 0x
(There is a picture of two triangles, they look similar to a failed attempt at a David's Star) 7 (They appear in the top-right of this: http://www.bungie.net/images/ads/vertical_banners/bnet_03_vert_ad_200.jpg )
KIKOWANI.0624
23:03:28:30
K97.28.0003303.D0
That's all I can get. The rest is too small to see, though I can see the 55.6992.3850 vaguely.
Possible corruption, but not entirely sure
-
Thanks for the report, Pyre! Haven't noticed the triangular "7" device before. Interesting.
Welcome to the forum! :)
-
at the risk of being laughed at ..... any one else tried simply googling the number, the third hit down caught my eye.
I know its just another clan forum, but I did like the ie address bar logo, oh and one of their avatars from the D7P Avatars folder
-
If you reorder the decimals you get. 556.992.3840 It looks like an American phone number, but I can't find the area code.
-
Yeah... dialing in the US errors out when you enter the area code.
-
Here (http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=23476199&postRepeater1-p=1) is an idea from the big forum. Adding each part together between the decimals yields.
5+5=10
6+9+9+2=26
3+8+4+0=15
So some speculated about the date October 26, 2015. It doesn't look like anybody set their XBoxes to that date to test it out though. Perhaps setting to that date and taking a peek at the magic wall or squidhenge might yield something.
-
If you group the numbers into two-digit decimal codes, then convert to ASCII, you get Gherjsz. Well, actually you get:
55=7
69=E
92=\
38=&
40=(
...which may as well be Gherjsz. Might be worth remembering that 55=7 in ASCII, though.
-
I have no idea how to figure out how to lay out Latitude and Longitude, but I do feel like its on the right track. I fooled around a bit, attached are some of my results.
http://http://itouchmap.com/latlong.html
I was working from this site. I also cheated by removing decimals.
55.69923840
89.0387722
-
Looks cold either way.
-
Isn't MS based on a real city?....wonder what its Latitude and Longitude is....
-
Never mind. :-[
Mombasa, Kenya
Region: Coast
Country: Kenya
Latitude: -4.05
Longitude: 39.6666667
-
Try setting the date to the day the mombasa invasion happend? Or can the xbox not go to 2552? try the month date. I think we could get the date (if we dont already know) from sadies story
-
We know that this number- The Ubiquitous Number (UN)- appears above District Doors... but does it appear over EVERY district door, all of the time? Well... to answer that question we simply need to take a photo of every vid screen above every side of every door! So if you're not feeling keen to posit and/or test a new theory of what the number is, you can still help by mapping out where it occurs.
:)
A District Door HAQ (Hypothetically Asked Questions)
Q: How many District Doors are in New Mombasa?
A: 38, if you include the four "ONI Doors" which lead from D10 into the ONI area; otherwise, 34. This includes locked district doors doors, including those that lead into (or are within) dark areas.
Q: How do we accurately specify which door we took a photo of?
A: If you use my District Door IDs (image (http://subculturelifestyle.com/gallery/v/SGP/maps/plots/SL-2009_12_08-ColdGlider-Map-DistrictDoors.jpg.html),thread (http://subculturelifestyle.com/forum/index.php?topic=414.0)) when you name your photo files, everything should tie together nicely! Don't forget that the SGP has many fine blank maps (http://subculturelifestyle.com/gallery/v/SGP/maps/blanks/) if you need them for marking down your own finds!
Q: So how should we split this up so we can all work together?
A: I suggest that interested members simply pick a district and run with it... just let us know which one you're working on so that others can choose a different one. I call D09! I'll also do a larger one like D08 if nobody else wants it.
We should make sure to snap photos of both sides of the door when possible. Also, at least one door (D0508-B) changes state. (It's locked when you begin a campaign, then unlocked when you start the Mombasa Streets mission.) Theoretically, this means there are 76 sides- but currently we do not have access to see the other side of 15 locked doors... and one we cannot see at all (D0299-A). This brings the number down to 57 (if I counted correctly!) Fifty-seven photos in five days (or less) among the entire SGP: cake, right?
-
I wondered if the numbers were representative of their positions in the alphabet (i.e. a=1, b=2 etc.) When that Gherjsz-ed out on me I wondered if perhaps it still held true but with a Caesarian Cipher (ie. a=1 +1, b=2+1, etc.) so I made a program in Excel for checking out the Rotated permutations. The classic Caesarian cypher is Rot-13 meaning you add 13 to each position's numerical value, effectively moving it halfway through the alphabet. Spoiler: I got Gherjsz down the pipe, but for the sake of thoroughness here are all the permutations. I only went through Rot-25 because Rot-26 would start it over at Rot-0.
e e f i i b c h d z ROT 0

Scatcycle makes an interesting point here (http://subculturelifestyle.com/forum/index.php?topic=453.0).
We've considered looking a coordinates for our world, but havn't looked around in the ODST's world.
Similarly, if each district is it's own zone, it might have it's own coordinates.
Obviously each FF map will also have it's own.
-
Very intersting, it could make us totally mad, but :
if a=1, or 27, or (...) 6978, we have
55=C
6992=N
3840=L
Any idea ?
Does anyone tried something by changing date on the Xbox to October 26th 2015 ..?
Good luck !

Hey there I was looking over this topic and I thought I would throw in a random thought. Gherjsz keeps coming up when you try the alphabet thing. So what if it's in another language? I am The Lost Fox by the way some of you may remember me as kenji's friend or guest profile mostly considering I am still trying to get a gold membership.
I also noticed this number on the forum. 55.7759.7736. Have you tried that alphabet trick with this number? Maybe it's like a word jumble?
-
You know Kenji? do you know why he hasn't been here for a while? :P
I don't recall seeing that number before...Where did you get it from again?
-
[enter nightcrafter the necromancer]
Has anyone tryed going to Enigma's coordinates in-game?
-
These look like they might be geographic coordinates expressed in decimal degrees. (Please check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_degrees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_degrees) if you're unfamiliar with these.)
Google Maps (GMAPS) makes it simple to check. Just type the coordinates into the search textbox here:
http://maps.google.com/ (http://maps.google.com/)
For instance, try the coordinates -4.057532,39.670431 which should take you to a location in Mombasa, Kenya. Now where have I seen that name before?
You can also specify URL parameters to directly link to a location based on coordinates. Use the base URL http://maps.google.com/maps
then add the "q" parameter to specify the coordinates, like so:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=-4.073387,39.671541 (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=-4.073387,39.671541)
Hey! What do you know! Another familiar name.
But I digress... the point is that the ubiquitous number could be half of a lat-long pair (geocode value) for a real-world location.
For instance, the lat might be 55.6992. Or 55.69923840. If we zero out the missing coordinate, we have four possible starting locations. The second one looks darn promising:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=55.69923840,0 (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=55.69923840,0)
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=0,55.69923840 (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=0,55.69923840)
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=-55.69923840,0 (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=-55.69923840,0)
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=0,-55.69923840 (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=0,-55.69923840)
Using the number for both coordinates puts us right on highway 315 in Russia (which happens to intersect highway 317 14.2490 miles south!):
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=55.69923840,55.69923840 (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=55.69923840,55.69923840)
Perhaps other cryptic numbers we have seen in ODST indicate offsets of this coordinate.
I'm excited to see what other possibilities you find using the ubiquitous number in a geo coordinate!

Isn't there a way to make in-game location coordinates appear?
And hello again!
(And no, Enigma, I don't!)
-
Hey, it's Ark! Welcome back!
And I do not know how to turn on the coordinates, but it is possible.
-
Ark, do you mean those Pan Cam-style coordinates?
-
Ark, do you mean those Pan Cam-style coordinates?
Those are all the coordinates we have in ODST. (Oh and hi!)
I'm a little surprised that this hasn't been that much discussed before...maybe it was in an another thread?
Anyway:
The coordinates display in a white, sans-serif font, aligned to the upper-left corner of the screen. The coordinates consist of three space-separated numbers, followed by a slash, followed by two more space-separated numbers, another slash, another number, and then either "[normal]" or "[pan-cam]". Here is an example of coordinates that may be shown:
212.377 159.564 137.233 / 91 -1.74 / 1.000 [normal]
The first three numbers show your exact position in the map, relative to its center. The numbers are a three-dimensional coordinate pair. The first two coordinates are your X- and Z-coordinates (lateral position); the third coordinate is your Y-coordinate (vertical position). You can never go farther than 50000.000 units from any map's center, though no map's playable area ever comes close to that size.
The next two numbers show the camera's angle of rotation. Both values are in degrees. The first value shows your lateral orientation- if it's 0, you're looking east; if it's 90, you're looking north. The second value is your vertical orientation- if it's 0 or 180, the camera is level; if it's 90, the camera is looking straight up; and if it's -90 or 270, the camera is looking straight down.
The third number is the camera's speed, which can only be adjusted while in Pan Cam mode. Following that is the current camera mode.
Therefore, the ubiquitous number cannot be used as a coordinate in the state that it is. However, since you can (seemingly) get about 50 000 units far from the center, it would be possible that the dots in the code represent the break between the coordinates (xx.zzzz.yyyy). Since there are no decimals in this model, the coordinates would be (55.000,6922.000,3840.000).
Worth trying?
[EDIT 2013.09.07 to remove corrupted unicode characters]
-
I believe that's what Ark was getting at, and why she posted that query here.
The description in the Halopedia is incorrect with regard to X, Y, and Z. The Z-coordinate is the third number, not the second. So it's X, Y, and Z (as it should be). Simply jump to see the change in Z.
I poked around a little in ODST with this: I think it's definitely going to require you to be out of map to obtain a Z of 3840.
-
And for a second time, I revive this thread, mostly to point out that the images seem to be broken. To me, it doesnt make much sense for any of the three sections of te Ubiquitous Number to be the height of the player/camera except for 55. Unless I have a misconception in the size of the coordinates intervals, those other numbers would require being stupidly far out of the map. The only thing I can think of being able to see that high up would be to see the large Y shape created by the highways, as shown by Imppa (I think). Because Scat found the number used previous to ODST, it might be possible that Bungie isn't telling us about something new, but warning us that we forgot something previously. What if there was something awesome in Halo 3? The incessant appearances of the number is a pretty apparent plea for attention, but a plea for what?
EDIT: If yore not buying that Halo 3 stuff, let me point out that the first section is 55, and there are five plinths. Could be something.
-
And for a second time, I revive this thread, mostly to point out that the images seem to be broken.
Thank you for being persistent and pointing this out again, Nightcrafter. All of the image links were to the old domain, so I updated the original post (http://www.gruntspajamas.com/forum/index.php&topic=249.msg1095#msg1095) and the images are there now.
Thanks to some very friendly generosity some time ago, I received my own (unopened) ODST controller. At some point I will have to scrutinize it more closely and compare to what we have already noted.
Perhaps the number was just a more obfuscated coding of the Bungie IP (as was seen on the Reach controller) and they dumbed things down the second time around.
It might not be a bad idea to simply ask them, since doing so got us a lot of helpful info regarding the missing BOB spawn on TotS.
-
Does anyone know what Bungie's phone number is? Because 556-992-3840
EDIT: Busted, called it and it's just a message saying it's a "Non-Working Number"
