A poster at the Big Forum clued me into this Wired article (http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/12/name-that-waterworld) which is worth a read for two reasons:
1: How cool is it that the name "Reach" is flooding the poll?!?
2: You can read how the cataloging of planets is not too different from the recently proposed method of cataloging plinths (http://subculturelifestyle.com/forum/index.php?topic=462.msg2646#msg2646)!
What a fascinating connection between science and gaming.

Wow, is Wired a believable resource? The images look fake.
I haven't watched anything about it on the TV... If it was real, it would've been a MAJOR discovery and it would be made public right away...
If it IS real:
Too bad scientists don't care about whatever name people suggest on the Internet. Having an Earth-like planet named Reach would be epic. :)
EDIT: Yes, the planet is real. Not as Earth-like Wired said it was, but it's the most Earth-like we know. The images are clearly fake, though.

Wired has been a reputable source for over a decade and the image is most likely an artist's rendering of what the scientist think the planet may look like based on their data. This is a common occurrence when actual photo evidence is not possible.
