I don't think I recall seeing this phenomenon, but the polarization of the visors is directly correlated with night vision. Recall the cutscene in ODST where Buck says "if you ever fall for a lady, make sure she's got balls." He has his helmet on, and only polarizes it as he turns away. Perhaps it's beneficial to not polarize one's visor when it's not needed?
Anyway, I'm just saying that the different colors of he visors could be due to different polarizing compounds, that are useful in different situations. Unpolarized visors may in fact be the same color as the default visor. Think about transition lenses that you can get for eyeglasses.
