SGP Task Force: The Librarians / Re: The Mbaraki Pillar
« on: August 22, 2012, 02:05:00 »
Doh! I can't believe that I never made the connection that the orbital elevator could be a spiritual implementation of the pillar! I know the locations are different, but the functions seem nearly the same! People place sacrificial foods and stuffs at the base of the pillar, to be taken up to the gods, people 'place' their food and goods at the base of the orbital elevator to be lifted towards the heavens.

This theory seems to point in the direction that the New Mombasa Uplift is some kind of spirit or god like figure. When the Uplift Reserve is taken into account, this could be another point for Uplift-Deityism. The reserve was made by shipping in dirt from the canal that cuts through New Mombasa (Librarians check me on that). One could view this action as creating land out of the sea, a large part of many creation stories. The fact that this land is then used for the preservation of plants and animals give Uplift Reserve an almost Garden of Eden aspect, the small plot of Paradise amongst the urban landscape.

Unfortunately, the real world location of the pillar is on the opposite side of Mombasa from the fictional location of the orbital elevator.

Yes you can. Be warned, taking a picture during this pausation will result in a garbled picture.

Taking a screenshot would be pretty useless, since 343i doesn't support ODST screenshots  :'(

Is it possible to pause a cut scene that has the SI overlay with these hex patterns in it? I could try to copy them down by hand if I could pause, because some of those flash by pretty quickly, IIRC.

Thanks for sharing, I didn't know this video existed.
Same here, thank you for this. :)

However, the connection between this and ODST is quite feeble..not only because it seems improbable by gut feeling, but also because, well, ODST isn't about "hiding", is it? It's much more about Lone Wolf guerrilla warfare in the dark, which surely isn't the case here. :P

I found it interesting that Bungie, who almost always does everything for a reason, had re-uploaded these trailers. The fact that 'Believe' was used as the tagline for that particular trailer, instead of 'Finish the Fight', caught my eye. It made sense in my head to connect ODST's running around in the dark with Hunted's darkness.

I'd like to reboot this search, but to approach it from a different angle. I suggest employing a sort of "music genome" technique similar to what Pandora does for their music suggestions, identifying the unique sounds and features for each section of the OST. For those of you who have listened to the OST, you will have no doubt noticed that each song is split into multiple, distinct sections, almost as if each section was it's own song. Another aspect to note is that (in my experience) the 'Superintendent Shuffle' hardly ever plays the sections from the same song. If we can come up with an easy way of identifying each section, this project will become so much easier, and players won't just be saying "The music changed in Squidhenge," they will be saying "The music changed from the second section of Deference for Darkness to the first section of The Menagerie!"

Here's the first few songs:

1 Overture
   S1 0:00
      Starts with rain
      Orchestra, slow background
      Solo violin, slow melody
   S2 1:55

      Soft 'knocking' sound
   S3 2:44

Fast high melody in beginning, multiple instruments
Transitions to repetitive, 'clockwork' melody, middle range
      Slow background orchestra
   S4 3:50

      Low strings provide slow melody/harmony
High strings come in, continue melody
      Echo snare

2 The Rookie
   S1 0:00
Low strings, mostly stay on same note
      Echo snare
Mid-high strings come in, slow melody
      Piano intermittent, sometimes jazzy riffs
   S2 1:41
      Low strings, like S1
      Heavy percussion
      High strings providing harmony
      Cymbal transition
Low strings play sparse bass line
Mid-high strings play moderately paced melody
High strings move to fast, repetitive melody
Low strings play almost chromatic ascending line
High strings crescendo a very tense chord/ear piercing noise

      Transitions to different ambiance
      Repeating 'knocking'
      fade transition to S4
   S4 4:59

      Percussion
      Echo bass, repetitive bass line
      Synth chords/harmony
      Mid-high strings play slow melody
      Melody moves to low-mid strings
Soloist singer begins high slow melody
      Fade transition to brief ambiance
      Echo beeps
      Bass and percussion return
      Bass stops
      Echo percussion
   S2 3:13
      Percussion
      Fast 'tinkling'
Choir or synth providing low background harmony
Percussion cuts away and low, fast, electronic sounding bass cuts in
Transitions immediately afterward to percussion and tremolo synth
Cuts back to percussion and fast bass
      Heavy drum hits, tinkling starts
Back to percussion and tremolo synth
Changes to Heavy drums and low choir
Cuts back to percussion and fast bass
Back to percussion and tremolo synth
      Heavy drums and low choir
   S3 5:06

Well drat. None of the links go to the same place any more.

This list is a composition of all the ideas that SGP members have had that were never finished or thoroughly fleshed out. Most of the titles are chosen so that anyone could work straight from them without reading the thread they link to. If anyone is looking for something to do, this would probably be a good place to start.

Fixed a lot of broken (old) and just plain messed up links. Also, I believe the "Unknown Corporation Wing" is Misriah Armory.

EDIT: I believe I have found a new company, "Fueder Construction". You can see their building while looking East-Northeast from the 93 building Dutch looks at at the end of Uplift reserve in District 9. Screenshots may be incoming, hopefully.

EDIT2: Nope. I'm behind on Bungie dropping Halo support :(
But I did find this image on Halo nation. It appears to be from the other side.

I'm not going to be drawing too many connections in this post, I'm merely sparking conversation
Earlier today, Bungie seems to have reuploaded several of their live action trailers on to youtube. I have seen Landfall, Starry Night, and Believe, but Hunted is a new one for me. I was reminded of one of Halo 3's taglines at the end of this video:

I think everyone knows which wall I'm referring to here. With Hunted's main theme of going dark to avoid detection, ODST seems to be linked to this video, even though it was released for the previous installment in the Halo series.

ODST General Discussion / Re: How Bungie should have done it....
« on: April 28, 2012, 00:43:29 »
Nice theory there. I do have a few questions though. You and your friends just stopped trying to get across the bridge? You made some good connections, there may be more to it. I remember Waypoint had a video on holding out on the bridge, IIRC. Good job on the new analysis on the "Hollow Men". Where do you see the Bungie logo in the orange sign? You may have miss spoken, but what do you mean by 'Lumumba'? And what about the KKU.DDL file, is this from the posters?

I am most definitely wanting to apply this to my NA-ODST theory. Let me look at audio log locations...

And that theory would be... ?

Sorry for the late response, the thread is here. Good work on the Bob guides!
