Finding something is often the easiest part.  Doing something with what you've found is the true beauty.

In the case of the Halo: Reach data pads (whose locations were leaked before we even had the opportunity to play the game) all is not lost.  We can expect countless YouTube videos showing us where to go to get each of the 19 data pads, scored hastily with stolen pop songs that have absolutely zero relevance to the game.  But who is going to explain what they mean?

Putting the Halo story pieces together is a much more difficult task.  Reporting where the content is located versus interpreting what the content means is the difference between buying a cheap electonic keyboard and being able to play the piano.

So how is the SGP affected?  We're still left with a significant challenge even if the "thrill of the hunt" is no longer there.  Just as Apollo and company are trying to interpret Halsey's Journal, we also need to interpret the data pads.

Personally, I don't feel that I should allow myself to be denied the thrill of the hunt just because some loser wanted to make money from an unfortunate game leak.

So to that end, I'm refraining from reading any of the leaked info and I'm not going on data pad searches with anyone who has.  At least for a little while.  It sounds bratty and childish, but I paid good money for my game and I want to enjoy it.  Waaah!  I want the satisfaction of finding a few of these things with my own effort.  I want the thrill of the hunt was well as the thrill of the catch.

So who's with me?  Looks like Imppa?  Apollo?  Pulse?  Ark?  Do we all "take an oath" not to look at the data pad spoilers?

I must have missed the hype if there was any, but when I opened up my Reach Limited Edition controller on launch day I was pleased to find a marketplace code card.  Indeed, the "contents" listed on the box reads:
    • HALO: REACH Limited Edition Wireless Controller
    • Downloadable Content
    • (2) AA Batteries]
The code give you a virtual representation of the controller itself, held in your hands, which appears to be controlling a Banshee which flies around you.  (You can look at my avatar on XBL to see).

Anyone get the limited edition headset?  Does it, too, come with a code?  Is it different?

Click the right stick on a weapon with a scope to bring up your binocular hud.  In the lower left, you'll see the BIOS number as we've seen on Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST.

    01000100011000010111011001100101
    SPARTAN III BIOS S56.7854.3354-DKW

The binary translates to "Dave" in ASCII.

Halo Reach General Discussion / ONE DAY LEFT!
    « on: September 13, 2010, 15:59:47 »
There's nothing quite like the excitement of a Bungie release.  When Halo 3 launched, fans screeched tires from the parking lots of game retailers to get back home as soon as they could to slap in a game disc they'd be playing for the next three years.  Online multiplayer- on launch night- was a completely different social scene than it was in Halo 2.  If only for one night, the random people you were match-made with were filling your headset with "Ooohs" and "Ahhhs" and "Did you see that?" instead of blatant trash-talking laden with obscenities.  It felt like one of those rare events when the whole world was watching... and you were part of it.

Halo 3: ODST, for all of it's awesome firefight action and atmospheric open-word city searching, paled in comparison with Halo 3 as a launch night experience.  Cooperative campaign was a lot of fun, but you were limited to four players.  And because it was the first time anyone had set foot into the darkened city streets of New Mombasa, it took some time for players to navigate their way to the actual campaign levels with the best action sequences.  ODST Firefight- as we all know- did not provided for online matchmaking.  So it was you and three of your friends... for as long as you could stay awake... finding your way through the dark as mostly soothing music played.  (That being said, we at the SGP know it's an incredible game whose depths we are still exploring.)

In less than 24 hours, that Halo 3 launch experience will be relived with a vengeance!

Like a fresh box of doughnuts, Halo Reach is so laden with delicious choices that players are forced to choose only a few of the many gluttonous options available to begin digesting immediately.  With both Campaign Mode and Firefight Mode sporting matchmaking online play, you can choose where you want to share your "Ooohs" and "Ahhhs" with the world.  As this functionality has grown, the term "multiplayer mode" has become a bit of a dinosaur in the context of contemporary video gaming... and most certainly when applied to Halo.

So get your NAT squared away, and rehearse your best take of "Look at the size of that thing!" because Halo: Reach is going to be massive!  See you online!!!

    I. Description of Cinematic Glitching
Cinematic Glitching is the alteration of in-game cinematic segments by moving in-game objects to target places located on the Field-Of-View of the virtual cameras that "shoot" the Cinematics prior to the playback of a Cinematic.
This is possible due to the fact that Halo 3: ODST's cinematics are rendered in real-time by the Halo 3's graphics engine, rather than being pre-rendered videos.

    II. List of Glitchable Cinematics
Bellow will be shown images of cinematics before being glitched and after being glitched.
The possibilities are endless: you can place any object anywhere, but we have a thing for Plinths. :)

    IV. SGP Guide Update Procedure
SGP Guides are initially created in a "Work-In-Progress" (WIP) board as a separate topic.  The WIP topic is where members discuss, edit, and eventually approve "release versions" of the guide.  Release Versions are then copied to the main "SGP Guides" board and set to read-only.  The WIP topic remains open for replies in order to accommodate future updates.

If you would like to propose an emendation to this GUIDE (correction, addition, etc.), the WIP topic can be found here.

Intel / Deliver Hope (Extended Cut)
    « on: September 11, 2010, 15:11:28 »
"Deliver Hope Extended Cut" is now available on the Xbox360 Dashboard under [Spotlight/Countdown to Reach]!

    Release Timeline updated.

...and my humble opinion is that this is the best damn trailer that has ever been released for the Halo franchise.  If you haven't yet watched it, today is the day.

    From ODST in-game "push" update:

    Quote
    HALO: REACH E3 TRAILER!
    Prepare For Launch.
Going where no man has gone before is standard operating procedure for Noble Team, but even they weren't prepared for Operation Uppercut.  Backs against the wall and facing the full might of the Covenant invasion, Six must rely on his unique skill set and perilous involvement in ONI's secret Sabre program to launch a surprise attack against the Covenant fleet in the last place they expect to me met by resistance.  And since you weren't on hand to witness this trailer's maiden voyage at E3, Bungie brought back some footage so you can relive the launch sequence on Bungie.net and Marketplace.
