I thought it might be Sorvad, otherwise I have no idea who it is, but Halsey's journal mentions an assistent of Dr. (I forget name) who she had sent to Reach in order to hack Covenant systems and break Covenant codes.

The guy's name is Gillespie.  So that might be that data pad guy.

The other side of the paper is a handwritten note that talks about the legendary statue and the ONI container that come with the legendary edition.

I think the artifact in Halsey's lab is just "knowledge" of which Cortana is the "guardian".  The ONI lab is like a bridge and there are wires connecting the glowy ball to Cortana's chamber, so there's that connection.

The 'latchkey' is probably some code that gives basic access.  Is Bungie retconning the Fall of Reach?  Is the "knowledge" merely getting to Halo?  Or is there more to it?

The important question to answer is, if there is more to it, what exactly is that?

And of course, why was Dr. Sorvad so paranoid?  In other words, WHO was he afraid of?

Sorry for the flood here, but I have one last thought about Halsey's journal for the night.

The ripped pages scanned into this thread actually have a little bit more text than those in my journal.  It almost looks like the last words are "overthrow the ... government".

The AIs knew about Halsey's experiment, could she have learned of them?  In any event, I've concluded that the content of those pages - even though we know the nature of the experiment they describe - are HUGELY important.  So, maybe they're hidden in the game?  The journal itself we know to be left behind after "The Package", that's how we're told it was discovered.  In fact, it's in-game in the tribute room.

Let's look for the pages!!!!

Okay, I've scanned the gibberish paper from the legendary edition for the bold and the brilliant to decode:

[EDIT - NOTE: the font distorts some of the symbols, for example under the 'D' in 'Administration' there is a "-fishTM-".  That 'fish' is actually Omega, a circle open at the bottom with two feet, but the font is really 'pointy'.  All of these symbols are in the "Mac Roman" ASCII set, except for the fractions "1/2" "3/4".]

There is shotcode all over this level, has that been discussed anywhere?

One more tidbit, apologies if people find this overwhelming.

I have a theory that I've linked to in a couple other threads.  I figure this is actually the most relevant place to link.

In the theory, I explain why I think the journal implies that the data pad AIs are behind the events at Visegrad.

Re: the ripped pages- Halsey talks about doing something about a thought from her subconscious, one since her youth.  She metions her father reading her "Oz".
I've concluded this refers to the "man behind the curtain".  Taken in context, you realize that Halsey thinks her experiment has something to do with fate or destiny (in John-117's case she says 'luck').  If you read the data pads, the dates correspond precisely (and Halsey's civilian ID): the ripped pages were Halsey following through on her experiment to create a structure in slipspace for immortal AI.  I'm certain about all of this, but I'm not so certain about what this has to do with fate.  My best guess is that Halsey is maybe wondering if someone out there is controlling the destiny of the universe, or manipulating it.  I.e.: the Forerunner/Precursor who have used this slipspace technology to 'ascend'.  Which is why they're not around....???

Also, the legendary edition comes with a note that describes the statue.  This is the only thing special it has besides the massive box itself, and the statue which features yet another shotcode.  I figure it might be important.

It's from 'a friend' to 'cousin' (is cousin an Insurrectionist?).  It has Japanese figures, which I have determined to be dates.  The first just is January (first moon).  The second lower down is specifically January 14th.  The date on the top is January 15th.  'a friend' says he got the limited edition package (ONI canister) from the 'old man's things' before he died 'last [January 14th]'.  So the 'old man' who owned Halsey's journal died January 14th 2609, and the legendary box was sent 2610.  "a friend" says he served with the old man back in the [25]80's when "your cousin"('cousin's' cousin) and I were still with Beta 5 (where Noble 6 was before joining NOBLE team in 2552). Could this be some internal Bungie reference ( 2500 = 1900, 2600 = 2000, Bungie coworkers/classmates/deadlines/Frank O'Connor????) - wild speculation.

It appears to be written on the back of used stationary bearing the letterhead "Colonial Administration Authority".  Printed on this side is a bunch of gibberish.  I've searched a lot of ASCII and unicode symbol groups, and I think this code is just Mac Roman.  Which means someone was probably just holding down shift and option on their mac and typing gibberish.  However, the last line ends"...X16-84165-01".  So, there's that.  I've tried to decode it, but have gotten nowhere.  I'm still trying a few things.  Feel free to join in if you have the paper.  I can scan it actually, if you'd like.

I just want to repeat some of the wording of this mostly useless letter about sending the statue to the "museum of humanity" from the Halo 3 marketing campaign.
"Some may find the artifacts life-altering; all would find them historically significant"  So, this is referring to the contents of the limited edition.  Could it be that the truth-seekers will find more in it than the average reader?

Also: "you can hand over the container to Ms. Bjarne at the museum ... or get it ot someone at IN.  There's plenty of stuff in there that the old guard may still be willing to kill over."

I just wanted to provide context to this journal discussion.

Halo Reach General Discussion / Re: Easter Egg > Septagon

Not to digress too much, but a bnet commentor noted that the Marathon logo is now completely missing from Halo.  You can't even use it as an emblem.

His theory was that Bungie is trying to distinguish between their IPs better, to prevent confusion.

Which means.........

In the legendary commentary, Marcus Lehto said that the cutscene where Kat and Carter argue about the plan to blow up the carrier is actually modelled physically under the beach at the beginning of Long Night of Solace.

Maybe what you've found contains the spaces used in those cutscenes.  Or maybe he's leading us astray?

Halo Reach General Discussion / Re: Vidmaster Challenge
« on: October 11, 2010, 05:09:26 »
My theory on this is to focus first on just the BOBs.

The switches seem to be goofy easter eggs for the most part (tribute room, dance club, race track).

Can we find 2 BOBs on each level?  Let's try for that, then try killing them all on regular old legendary.  Literally... 'wipe them out'.

The basis of my theory is that the pieces of the vidmaster challenge are just guidelines in the spirit of Bungie traditions to find easter eggs.  So, the switches part is a clue that in general there are secret switches to push.  The terminal part is a clue that there are secret things to read.

And the bobs: there are secret bobs.  By the way, BOB in Marathon stood for "Born On Board" and refered to the colonists aboard the UESC Marathon.  Basically, these were any and all humans in the game - in Halo the closest comparison would be the bridge crew in the first level of Halo: CE.  Or Marines in general.

So, the point is that in Marathon the BOBs were far from secret, but in Reach, they are these secret golden ranger elites.  Just like how the switches and terminals in Marathon were regular old switches and terminals.  In Reach they are special and secret (easter eggs, data pads).

It's obvious Bungie wants us to kill the BOBs (wipe them out... 'all of them', and why else would they be called BOBs if you look at the vidmaster challenge as a guideline for secrets - what I'm trying to say is that in Marathon a BOB is just a BOB, but to a vidmaster, a BOB is something that MUST BE KILLED, ALL OF THEM)

Is there a BOB thread somewhere?  I say again, 2 per level, let's do it!

Hey, I've found my theory!

Reflecting back on it, I think the Ark/Mendicant Bias stuff was going way too far.

But the dates in the data pads and Halsey's journal line up, and Halsey's journal refers to stuff in-game, so I have to conclude the AIs were behind something to do with Dr. Sorvad.

I just don't know what or why.  I literally am totally lost as to the connection with the Covenant showing up right when Sorvad tries to send the message.  Or at least, when NOBLE team arrives.

I am left with the impression that someone has painted a picture, and not finished painting.  I have no idea where to look to complete the picture, but I'll be doing what I can to help find secrets!

I want to mention something called operation WHITE GLOVE.

The materials that come with Halsey's journal mention it as the operation to clear out and demolish Sword Base (during this op the journal is supposedly found).

In "the Package" NOBLE team is given the task of demolition, and then we find out otherwise.  They mention that someone will carry out the demolition.

At the end of the level, we see a huge swathe of land sink into the earth in a massive explosion.  The weather is also daytime, and not nearly as ashey and burney as earlier.  I have no doubt that this explosion is "WHITE GLOVE".  I also think that the Glacier (FF) radio chatter refers to this.

This is not controversial in and of itself, it's part of the story, and it's cool to know that there's this whole universe actually going on in the background of the main story thread of the game.  Still, it seems like there are some gaps in time, gaps that you wouldn't ever notice if you weren't paying attention.

So, for the search parties - maybe there are significant clues to reveal more about the nature of this event.  Even some boxes labelled "explosives" would be a find.

I have a rather extensive theory, that I'm not so sure about anymore, which if you want to read it is here:
http://reachtheory.blogspot.com/2010/09/ai-theory.html

It has more to do with Halsey's Journal, but the gist as well as major supporting fact of the theory has to do with Dr. Sorvad's coincidental death.  Dr. Sorvad is the dead scientist in this level, and the relay hub in Visegrad went dead two days beforehand right when Dr. Sorvad sent Halsey a message saying he was about to send her the 'latchkey'.

The basic premise of my theory is that the AI's in the data pads are behind what happened to Dr. Sorvad and therefore possibly bringing the Covenant to Reach

I won't go too much into my theory, but here's a discovery: In Halsey's Journal, it says that Dr. Sorvad was paranoid about his safety and that of his crew.  The journal references a 'Farragut Station' and how people there had disappeared (farragut station is the old run-down building outside of Sword Base) in connection with what seems to be xenoarchealogical work.  We know from "the Package" what Sword Base is all about in that respect.

In the journal, it says that Dr. Sorvad intentionally keeps a "skeleton crew", because he doesn't want too many to be sacrificed in case they 'find out too much' (that's the clear implication).  The Data Pads make it clear that the AIs knew about the Forerunner for some time and did NOT want the humans to know about them.  Read my theory for more evidence.

Interestingly, in "Winter Contingency", the label that appears in-game right before you discover Dr. Sorvad's body is "Skeleton Crew".   At the relay switch at the end of the level, the dead civilians have a screwdriver, a voltimeter for EE work.  Can we find out more?  Maybe piece together clues about what really happened between the time Dr. Sorvad sets out for the relay hub to send the latchkey to Halsey, and two days later when Noble arrives and finds the Covenant there.  It doesn't seem likely that the Covenant have been there for too long, Sorvad's daughter is still alive....

Also, a last bit of evidence.  The radio chatter on overlook talks about how the innies might have hit the relay hub because it connects Northern Reach to the rest of the colonies (not the whole planet).  The transcript I read mentions ?oilfields?, but I think this could be "ONI bases".  ONI seems to like to build on top of Forerunnersites, so, is there a deeper connection between this attack, the latchkey, and ONI?

I'm saying this in this thread because I think search parties should keep this in mind as they try to find clues in the game about what was going on.
