Title: Shot codes....may not be shot codes at all
Post by: EnigmaBiz on September 20, 2010, 16:59:07
I am working on my proof. All I can say is that I am not happy about it...

On the second mission I took an aerial photo of the housing area where you have to rescue the pinned down marines, and the base looked an awful lot like a shot code.. Basically the shot codes might actual just be a map.

Now I cant prove anything as of yet.....(will have pic's tomorrow)

Of coarse this doesn't explain why a shot code is found on the back of the instruction manual nor why citizens of reach wear shot code shirts...

Hmm...
My take on the "shotcodes" is that they are a new, symbolic language. Because not every human knows it, most "shotcodes" have their "common-language" representation alongside them (numbers and letters+numbers [B5]). Just check any SMALL shotcode on Winter Contingency.

I actualy like the little town representation theory. It makes the most sense (to me). If you knew the layout of your town/neighbors, you could tell what products are from where.

The best example I can give you (unless the citizens are randomized) is on Exodus, when you first see a Skirmisher.  Look near the top of the stairs, and you'll see a dead woman with a shirt that has a shot code on it.

MISSION 8: Boardwalk (at the start)

Go to the catwalk under the boardwalk. Near the middle you see a dead dude with a shot code shirt ( his shirt is covering half of it ), I think there is a better one later in the same level...I will get picture next time.

If anyone is on I need a aerial photo:

Winter contingency: mission 2

The photo need to be of the base where you have to back up the squad that is under attack (check point bravo?)

Use the covenant transport to push your camera out of the map so you can get a clear picture, above and centered.

If you could post it here that would be awesome.

Thanks

You were right Nigma, at least by the shape. +KFY! :)
So: how does this help us? Is there a way we can turn the base into a "shotcode"? Or can we use the other codes for it?

Well, I really don't know if it helps.. may be the SHOT CODES are a lot like the J-banners.. a address?...maybe? I mean how else could you tell the locations apart?

I am unsure if this helps....

Nice find, Enigma!  I thought the rounded buildings looked weird the first time I saw them, but I never thought there was anything to it.  Good call!  :)

Do all the shotcodes look the same, or are there different types? If so, there's probably more places that match the different shotcodes.  Maybe they could be the equivalent of the glyphs from ODST? (speculation there)

From what I can tell each of the 3 buildings on Mission 2 have different codes. building 3 (the one I have a picture of) is the most clear..  due to covenant attacks and over grown foliage building 3 was my focus.

based off my theory the few Reachling that are wearing shot code shirt are wearing their address....which is a little weird...

Well, that is kind of strange.  Maybe we should keep track of where we find citizens with the shot code shirts, and where the SC towns are?  We could set up a cartographer subboard similar to the one from ODST.

Maybe the shotcodes are specifically references to different areas of the game other than just WC?  By this I mean they may be pinpointing locations of datapads, bobs, etc.

Maybe we should start looking for 'shotcodes' that aren't circular to see if they're a form of cartography?  Some of them may point to areas of New Alexandria where the tall buildings viewed from above form a pattern.

First, I want to try scanning reversed versions of ingame shotcodes. Just so we don't throw out the shotcod theory too soon.

Noticed that the shotcodes (the ones on the walls, at least) dissappear on co-op, similiar to Y-glyphs. O.o
Wonder if they reappear like they did in ODST?
And why do they even vanish? Surely the game engine can't have so much burden that it needs every bit of procesing to run the game, and can't load some textures?
