BOB Video Guide Part 5 is up, for Tip of the Spear!  There's also a link in the OP.

BOB Video Guide Part 5: Tip of the Spear

Let me know what you think!  It's a shame about BOB 28, but I figure it's time to move on.

Actually, no!  I'll update the OP (along with the BOB Video Guide thread) with links soon, but I have full-run, no-death Legendary runs of this level for each known BOB!  Feel free to take a look at the videos (I'll have rendered clips) or wait until the Video Guide comes out, but I managed to figure out a strategy for each one.

I'm sorry, I don't have time to put the appropriate links into the OP, but if you're looking for Fuel Rod BOB footage, check out the post on HBO:

Above the images, there are links to the rendered clips I've made for each BOB on this level.  Not sure if that's what you're looking for, but wanted to save you time if it was.

Well, he does have stuff going on, I heard Bungie is working on a new game or something. :)

Even if it's glitched, I'm hoping that we can work around it, e.g. the LNoS Beach BOB.  Either that, or it's REALLY well hidden.  I'm thinking up high?  There are a lot of unreachable grassy ledges.  We'll see, I think a few people at HBO might look into this as well.

Please read the OP!  Niles Sankey replied, and it looks like we've got our work cut out for us!

So, pretty exciting news!  I posted on the HBO forum about this particular problem, and Urk saw it and mentioned it to Niles Sankey, the lead mission designer for Reach.  Mr. Sankey said he'd look into the code, and see what's up!!

It might be a while, but it's be nice to know that someone's looking into this, instead of us just banging our head against the wall in frustration.  I'll update here when I hear back!

Yeah, I don't want to revert either, but your point about the script triggers is a good one.  Long, long, ago I had battled a BOB after I made it to the Spire and grabbed a Banshee, which made me think that proximity is a big factor.  For the BOB that spawns closest, you've got to worry about Jorge alerting him, but the other two you can more or less ignore until you're more properly equipped, which is nice.  That FRG is still pretty fierce.

In any case, I've got videos for the BOB at the first Tyrant gun (#27), the closest BOB in the Spire area (#28), and the BOB that spawns by where the Invasion generator is (#30).  Once I get the far-left BOB (probably with a noob combo), and maybe re-do the video for #28 as it's ridiculously long, I'm going to do a run of the level on Legendary, with as few deaths as possible, killing everything, where no BOB spawns.  Then I'll try to re-ignite the TotS BOB search, both here and maybe in a few other forums, if I can get people interested.

I've noticed that there are a few "doomed" Falcons on the level, in addition to the one at the very beginning, that will be taken out by the Tyrant guns unless you move very quickly.  Not sure if that's part of this, but I'll try to save them in my run-through.

I'm trying to get all the BOBs on Legendary, and my video guides provide strategy for the same.  AR spam is essentially useless on this difficulty.

Scatcycle: The jetpack is too slow to catch up to the BOBs here; I keep Sprint, which is what you have when you land.

but the Fuel Rod BOBs are proving to be quite a challenge.
How so?

You spawn at the Spire with an Assault Rifle and DMR, so my trusty noob combo is just about out of the question.  For the BOB that spawns closest to you, you can grab a Plasma Pistol provided Jorge doesn't scare him off.  For the BOB that spawns far to the left, a direct assault is impractical, as he'll run one of three directions, and you can't catch up to him unless you happen to choose the right path.  For the BOB that spawns by one of the Invasion generators, you basically need to Sprint up to him and pray he doesn't nail you with a Fuel Rod.

I think that for the far-left one you can come back and get him later when you've got a Banshee, I've done that before.  The other two are likely to get spooked before you have a chance at that, so it's a lucky noob combo for the first one you see, and a desperate attempt at a Beat Down on the Invasion generator BOB.  If you could push Jorge off the edge, it would be easier, but no luck.

On a related note, don't try to pull the fancy Assassination animation on these guys.  They despawn 25 seconds from when they notice you; by the time you've caught up with them, you don't have time for the fancy stuff.  I did a full no-death Legendary run, assassinated one of the BOBs, and THOUGHT that I got him.  Watching the video, I saw that he despawned one or two frames from the end of the animation, and thus no kill.  It's not the slow, gradual despawn of the Winter Contingency BOBs either, it's MUCH more rapid, which is an interesting difference.

If anyone has a reliable method, let me know.  Running them over seems too risky; they just shoot you like mad as you slowly approach them.

The Video Guide will be going into suspended animation until mid-December at the earliest.  IRL priorities, etc.  I'll still try to squeeze in a TotS run here and there, but the Fuel Rod BOBs are proving to be quite a challenge.

I have a theory that the BOBs and the mystery helmet are two totally unrelated things, but I'll save that speculation for another time.  What's interesting is that Candland never says "we've never seen that helmet" but rather that they don't know what 343 has in store for it.  I think it's plausible that part of Bungie and Microsoft's agreement included turning over some secrets in Reach, allowing 343 to develop the mystery and get the fanbase to transfer from Bungie to 343 seamlessly.

By the time I had dropped the Falcon, Jorge's vehicle was already there and waiting.  You can only ride Jorge's Falcon, making me think that there are global variables that can be set regarding vehicles.  So, Exodus has Pilot.Banshee = 0; at Tip of the Spear has Pilot.Falcon = 0.  It's a shame, flying a Falcon through the canyon would be a lot of fun.

So, something strange happened, and I thought I'd see if any of you could see some significance in this; it might be interesting, it might not.

As you may know, there is a Falcon at the second Tyrant anti-air gun.  If you destroy the gun PDQ, the Falcon will survive (normally, it's destroyed by the Tyrant).

Not only did I save the Falcon, I managed to EMP it, flip it, and eject the pilot.  Unfortunately, Falcon piloting seems to be disabled for this level, and as such, no "Press X to pilot Falcon" prompt showed when I got near the Falcon.  I couldn't even flip it back over.

Pics:

Later, when I was in the other Falcon with Jorge, I fired a grenade round at the downed Falcon, and got a -150 point betrayal penalty.  I figured it was for the invisible pilot, but I'm not sure.  If anyone can think of a use for this, let me know.  Hadn't seen it before, thought it might be interesting.

The only thing I would want to ask him is about the TotS BOB issues, and this would need to be worded carefully.  Allow me to explain.

We're having a specific issue (there's about a one in five chance that no BOB spawns on Tip of the Spear) but it's not necessarily his area of expertise.  In my mind, this is THE issue right now re: BOBs.  There are different ways to count the number of BOBs, how to number and organize the BOBs, and so on, but that's largely moot.  Since I'll be wiping out each and every BOB spawn in Reach, on Legendary, in a full-run no-death game where I read all Data Pads, it doesn't matter if there are 10 BOBs or 49 BOBs.  I'm going for completion, so if what I'm doing is overkill it's not a big deal.  But, if we can't find a BOB, that's an issue.

Since we can repeatably predict the BOB spawns on every level except TotS, I believe we're aware of the BOB spawns with the exception of that level.  Once we get this particular issue cleared up, it won't be too long before I can complete the BOB guide and determine, once and for all, if anything happens if you wipe out all the BOBs on Legendary.

In short: I believe the missing Tip of the Spear BOB is the last significant BOB mystery, and I believe we should make some effort to get assistance there.
Dan didn't work on Tip of the Spear, so I think he can't help us with that.

Maybe the one he would probably be more apt to explain is Scat's (and CG's) question: why make the Banshee drivers on New Alexandria, a level designed by Dan himself, invisible and infinitesimally small?
Besides Scat's question, I could ask if he knows something about whether TotS is an exception in terms of BOB spawns or not - and if he doesn't, if he would kindly let me know who designed the mission.

Well?

Yeah, it may be entirely possible that most people at Bungie don't actually know about the TotS BOB spawn strangeness; a gentle inquiry might persuade him to ask the man responsible for TotS, and in turn send us a (probably cryptic) clue.  I don't expect us to go "tots bob lolwut" and he'll be all like, "omg amirite? you have to jump on a grunt's head 1000 times on Mythic omgwtfbbq".

Although, that would be rad.

There's an Elite Ranger; most actual Ranger-class Elites are Elite Specialists, so that might be the BOB.
