Report In! / Re: Dan Miller on Glyphs, Plinths, QTA and BOBs
« on: November 17, 2011, 15:08:27 »
The only thing I would want to ask him is about the TotS BOB issues, and this would need to be worded carefully.  Allow me to explain.

We're having a specific issue (there's about a one in five chance that no BOB spawns on Tip of the Spear) but it's not necessarily his area of expertise.  In my mind, this is THE issue right now re: BOBs.  There are different ways to count the number of BOBs, how to number and organize the BOBs, and so on, but that's largely moot.  Since I'll be wiping out each and every BOB spawn in Reach, on Legendary, in a full-run no-death game where I read all Data Pads, it doesn't matter if there are 10 BOBs or 49 BOBs.  I'm going for completion, so if what I'm doing is overkill it's not a big deal.  But, if we can't find a BOB, that's an issue.

Since we can repeatably predict the BOB spawns on every level except TotS, I believe we're aware of the BOB spawns with the exception of that level.  Once we get this particular issue cleared up, it won't be too long before I can complete the BOB guide and determine, once and for all, if anything happens if you wipe out all the BOBs on Legendary.

In short: I believe the missing Tip of the Spear BOB is the last significant BOB mystery, and I believe we should make some effort to get assistance there.

@Lord Friendship:  I've been meaning to report that I got the Beach BOB to spawn without destroying or moving the wraith.  This may or may not be interesting to you.  A film clip should be in my share.  Before I get all crazy about it, is this even news to you?  I believe your original article mentioned that you had to kill or move the wraith in order for the BOB to spawn.

Yeah, I'd like to see that.  From what I remember, the BOB has to drop in while one dropship is leaving, but the other is not arriving?  It's been a while, but I do seem to recall that I couldn't get him to spawn without taking out the Wraith.  Other videos I saw included one person who had jacked the Wraith and moved it away from the pier, just enough to get the pier Dropship to arrive at just the right time, hence getting the BOB to stick around briefly.  Let me know if you put a clip of that on YouTube, or at least a link to the video in your File Share.

My bad, I didn't clarify. I meant that there are only two types of Bobs, one you can kill from Falcons (Bobshees), and ones you kill without shooting from a Falcon.
You can kill bobshees without falcons. There are two on the Exodus level that you have to kill your hands.

I know what you meant, but I like the idea of beating a Banshee BOB to death.  I might try this.  Plasma overcharge, melee, repeat.  A lot.

There's a Falcon on Winter Contingency, and there are normal BOBs there.  New Alexandria and Exodus are the only levels with Banshee BOBs.  Dan Miller, who designed The Package (as well as New Alexandria, btw) has stated that there is no Banshee BOB on The Package.  I would strongly recommend that during the next Golden Opportunity challenge someone gets a vid proving this; I would, but I have no capture card.

Here's DMiller's comment: http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=1092899

So, no, it's not real.  Just some weird bug, which would have been nice to know before I spent an hour trying to Splaser it.  SUCCESSFULLY.  Still, took a long time.

If you jack a banshee but fail to kill the anonymous pilot, you should get the kill when he falls to his death.

Exactly.  I've asked RC Master to give this a shot (he has the current speedrun record for NA, and is pretty good at jacking Banshees mid-air) and I'll try it when I can.  If I get it, or if it isn't possible, I'll render a vid and put a link here.

Thanks, nightcrafter!

I like the discussion here, it's always good to get multiple points of view!

There are a few reasons why I don't think there are only 10 BOBs in Reach:

1. Allegedly, people have gotten one BOB on each level on Legendary; nothing happened.  I expect SOME indication of success when you've gotten "all" of them.

2. The "Elite Ranger BOB" description on Bnet says "Wipe them out" not "Get one on each level".

I'm not saying, at all, that more than one BOB can spawn at a time in a level.  I actually specify in Part 2 of my guide that if you want to get all 7 WC BOBs, you need to replay the level multiple times.  I could explain this again and again in my videos, but ultimately I'd be wasting my viewers' time.

On the topic of Banshee BOBs: you can't jack Banshees on Exodus at all.  For NA, the problem is one of speed; the NA Banshee BOB goes faster than a Falcon, so that trick where you "land" your Falcon on top, hop out, and jack the Banshee probably isn't going to work.  The only way you could do that is if you knew exactly where the Banshee BOB spawns, as in within a few feet, and happened to be in its path and ready to jack it a few seconds after it spawns.  It's not impossible, and I've tried it before, but it's certainly improbable.  In any case, there's no way to get the Banshee BOB Pilot to "land" on a roof, so you wouldn't be able to kill it separately... it still would be interesting to see if you got the GTC challenge a few seconds after you boarded him or not.

If I get time, I might try jacking the NA BOB again.  Might not be for a while though, what with HCEA and all that.

PS: Dan Miller did New Alexandria and The Package, but I don't think that he did Exodus.  I don't think it's fair to say that it's all because of him that the Banshee BOBs are wonky.

Another BOB Video Guide already?  I wanted to get this one out before HCEA dropped, so here it is!

BOB Video Guide Part 4: Nightfall

If anyone has any questions/comments/concerns, I'd like to hear them!  I'm always looking for ways to improve the guides, as I want them to be the definitive one-stop source for BOB info.

Of course, the next BOB guide won't be out until we figure out this TotS BOB thing.  When I can, I'm going to beat the level on Legendary, with zero deaths, while killing all possible enemies.  I figure that with a resource like that, it'll only be a matter of time until we find our missing BOB!

I wimped out and grabbed the Club BOB spawn, as I didn't have time to track down another one.

As an interesting side note, if this level has four unique BOB spawns, and there's a fifth BOB on TotS, there are 49 total unique BOBs in Reach.

7 x 7 = 49

And of course, seven is Bungie's favorite number.  Just something to consider.

Look forward to seeing that video!

That's supposed to exemplify that the Spire is a teleporter.  There's some dialogue about it as well.  Still, it would be interesting if it were possible to take it down.  Unfortunately, you don't have much firepower when it spawns, and it moves quickly.

I'm working on the TotS portion of my video guide now; I'm going to try and get a no-death, kill-everything run of this level on Legendary during the next Golden Opportunity challenge.  Until then, I'll just be collecting the known BOBs.  I haven't noticed anything new yet, except for the fact that you can take out the Phantom that drops the first Wraith you encounter (by the portable bridge).  I thought it might be a BOB, but one spawned later in the level.

The system available in my country is PAL. If you have a PAL-specific theory I can test, do tell - I'll try to manage some time do do it.
I'm actually kind of sad I haven't been helpful, but I've always got so much work to do it's impossible to spend time in ghost hunting (and I need my bi-weekly fix of multiplayer Slaying).

But still, if there is something only I can test, I'll be glad to do it.

PS: Differences between NTSC and PAL are not far-fetched at all - I remember a jump/shortcut on AotCR only NTSC people could do in Halo: CE.

The easiest way to check would be for you to take pictures of the BOB spawns on Winter Contingency, and we can compare those to the ones in my video.  Any difficulty works, just grab a pic before they become aware of your presence.

Also, is anyone here playing Reach on a PAL system?  ColdGlider, was your video guide made on a PAL system?  I suspect that the spawns and behaviors of the BOBs varies slightly between NTSC and PAL, but I'm not sure.

I'm glad you liked it!  I'll be sure to credit the group in the future, probably a nod to SGP and HBO at the end of each one.

If you haven't seen it, there's another link in the description for the video (there's a lot, I know...) that points to a new video showing the mystery helmet doll on Battle Canyon again.  This time, it gets bumped by a pink Spartan (about 20 seconds in) showing that it has physical interactions; I'm guessing it's hiding up in that room, and can be dropped down by an explosion.  Can't wait to get HCEA and find it!  That and the "grunt in a barrel" on Damnation.

Part 2 coming soon!  I'd like to have up to Part 4 out by the time HCEA launches, but we'll see.  Most of the footage is done, I just need to find the time to sit down and put it together!
